horse lady

(source: fiveprime.org)

Like pretty much every girl I love horses- make that horses, ponies, donkeys, mules... I started riding hunter/jumper when I was five and participated in my first horse show by the time I was 6.  Although I haven't ridden in a while (I've been sidelined after I got bucked off a couple years ago and shattered my rotator cuff) if anyone asks me what my hobbies are I find myself saying 'horseback riding'. I figure it is something I will always go back to and you bet my future babies will be horsemen/women. Some of my fondest memories are of riding my horse Mickey on my trainer's family ranch out by Krause Springs. After a day of lessons we would ride to the corner store off 71 to get candy, cokes and various other junk foods. On particularly hot summer days we would go down to the lake and swim with the horses. Mickey was 17.2 hands which is huge however he was one of the most gentle creatures I've ever known. He loved swimming and would run into the water with me riding bareback. When it got deep enough we would both become weightless while he swam and I floated off his back clinging onto this mane so as not to fall off whenever he decided to come busting back out of the water. Wet horses like to roll, even with you on them, and so it became a valuable lesson knowing how quickly jump off whenever I felt him falling to his knees. I also became an expert at the bareback mount which was essential to survival on long weekends out at the ranch- especially on a monster like Mickey. The biggest dream in my life is to have a ranch big enough to house my pair of paint horses, a clydesdale, a Belgian draft horse, 2 miniature donkeys and a mule I can ride western. Oh and lets just throw a shetland pony in there for the kids. Don't get me wrong- we'll have longhorns and buffalo as well but for now lets focus on the horses.

Settlement Home Quinceanera Pics!

I am finally getting to posting the pictures from the Settlement Home Quinceanera Miss Litvin, my sister Emily and I helped with. When we got to the salon at about 10:30am to help the girls prep before the festivities we found that they already had a makeup artist on hand. Since makeup was taken care of I decided to snap a few glamour shots which I plan on sending the girls sometime this week. Who doesn't love getting all dolled up and having their picture taken?! We then went to the actual Settlement Home to help set up with decorations and food preparation. The girls were then presented in true Quinceanera style by people close to them. Each girl was given a tiara and a bouquet of roses along with a roaring round of applause which I think made them a bit nervous- but in a good way. Afterwards a mariachi band serenaded everyone while we enjoyed a fajita lunch and cake. I was surprised by how sweet and considerate the girls were considering their situations. Some even seemed a bit immature for their age which is really the complete opposite of what I was expecting. Miss Litvin and I spoke with the events director and are planning another pampering party for sometime over the summer -but this time it will be just for fun! It was so nice to just hang out and get to know these lovely young ladies while indulging in our girliness. We also discovered that most of their funding comes from the government but they make a couple hundred thousand buckaroos via the big Settlement Garage Sale every year which will be November 4-6. Be sure to check it out if you haven't for unique finds at super duper cheap prices and know that your money is going to girls that not only need it but deserve it!

new threads

Wow, what a day! It actually started last night at the sold out Cory Morrow show at Antone's. My soon-to-be-famous-any-day-now husband was invited by a guy he had met playing out one night. He had gotten Zach a gig at the grand opening of the new Southern Thread store in the Domain and since they sponsor Cory he hooked us up with VIP tickets. I have been to Antone's loads of times but never as a VIP- oh I felt so cool!

Today was the grand opening party so Miss Litvin and I headed up to the Domain after volunteering at the Quinceanera (post on that to come soon) to see Eagle Eye play. I am happy to say he KILLED it!! All the employees, customers and even the owners of the company were loving him. He sold a ton of CDs and was gifted oodles and oodles of merchandise. Not only are they a great company to be connected to as a Texas musician but Zach really does wear their clothes! I actually just bought him 2 pairs of their jeans from Allens Boots on S.Congress for Christmas. I know the Domain is far but apparently they also have a store in Barton Creek Mall. If you find yourself in either locale check them out for a cool new take on old western wear styles: think embroidered long sleeve dresses, tie-dye thermals, and pearl-snaps for girls- yes please!

primp for a cause!

TGIF! This weekend Miss Litvin and LVT will be primping and polishing the young ladies of Settlement Home Austin via the good people at Austin Involved for their annual Quinceanera party! The Settlement Home for Girls is a residential treatment center therapeutic foster home for girls ages 7 to 18.  The girls have been removed from their families due to violence, neglect and abuse.  Since 1916, the Settlement Home has been providing support and care for these girls as they heal from traumatic childhood situations. We are sooo excited to have this opportunity to be part of a wonderful cause all whilst giving makeovers and gabbing with teenagers! Love it! Tonight we are heading over there to give manicures -never done that before but I've gotten plenty so I figure that makes me an expert. Then tomorrow we will be doing hair and makeup prior to the Quinceanera in addition to setting up and escorting the girls to the party. This is going to be so much fun for everyone involved! I plan on taking lots of pictures and posting very soon.

Thinking of manicures reminded me of the new TEXAS collection OPI has come out with. As always they have thought up the cleverest of names- "It's Totally Ft. Worth It", "Don't Mess with OPI", "San Tan-Tonio"-cute right?! The colors range from bright pinks/reds which speak to the glamour of the Texas woman, to burnt oranges, rich nuetrals and stone tones which whisper Balmorhea, Ft. Davis Mountains and Alpine areas.  Do any other states have a whole nailpolish collection devoted to them? I know some countries have been honored with such but no other states as far as I know. Although I like to consider Texas a country but thats for another post....
